The season three premiere finds Jefferson Pierce detained by the Asa, while Anissa continues to protect the city under a new name Blackbird. meanwhile, Agent Odell continues to manipulate and gear up for the supposed Markovian War.
After a bit of a lackluster season with Season 2, in my opinion, I wasn’t as excited about this season. However, this premiere won me over. It had everything that I have come to like about this show: great action, mystery, and the family bond. The set up in this episode definitely has me intrigued about what’s to come. Let’s briefly recap this exciting episode!
Jefferson Pierce aka Black Lightning (Cress Williams) is presumed dead by the greater public of Freeland. In actuality, he is being detained by the ASA and questioned (for thirty-one day) concerning the Green Light situation. While there, Pierce discovers that he can see through things without the aid of his suit. He also realizes that Odell (Bill Duke) is holding the young truth inducing meta Issa (Myles Truitt) as well as an ageing Tobias (Marvin “Krondon” Jones III). Jefferson and Lynn are reunited, but clearly being used by Odell just like he uses Issa. He has the young boy attempt to extract the location of the briefcase from Tobias, but to no avail. However, Tobias does reveal the chain of command. He tells Issa that Martin Proctor worked under Odell, who reports directly to the President of The US. In order to protect this secret, Odell poisons the young meta resulting in his death.Meanwhile, Anissa (Nafessa Williams) has remained dedicated to protecting people even though she cannot be seen as Thunder. In order to avoid this, she takes up the mantle of Blackbird. Her efforts to save the metahumans that are being gathered and put into cages gain the attention of the news. Clap Back News reporter Jamillah Olsen becomes interested in both Blackbird and later Anissa after they meet each other in a bar. While visiting one of the meta camps with the Reverend, they are attacked by a Markovian metahuman named Ned Creegan aka Cyclotronic Man. However, Commander Carson Williams and his team are sent by Odell to take him and the other Markovians out. Willams also threatens Deputy Chief Henderson (Damon Gupton) into issuing a press conference to announce a new city wide curfew. Meanwhile, Gambi (James Remar) discovers a weakness in the ASA’s perimeter and also informs Anissa that Commander Williams is a metahuman who can mimic other metas powers. Using this weakness, Anissa as Blackbird is able to lead many metas to safety, but is hit with a rocket blast. Her unconscious body is found by the Perdi in the woods. Elsewhere, Lala (Will Catlett) wakes up with the briefcase!
Overall, this was a strong season premiere. I truly hope the show can keep to this level and momentum. The cast and action are stellar. I am intrigued by the story for this season and look forward to what’s next. Also, I am very curious to see how the characters are introduced to the rest of the multiverse in Crisis On Infinite Earths in December.
